Project Description:
This design-build project calls for the depressed alignment of a 2.1-mile section of the Union Pacific Railroad line currently running through downtown Reno. Additionally it provides for the construction of 11 new street over-crossings, upgraded land-scaping and all associated curbs, gutters, street paving, signing, lighting and aesthetics. The project also includes the rearrangement of utilities including water, storm drain, sewer, a Kinder Morgan high pressure gas transmission line, gas, electric, and communications. Granite is utilizing a variety of temporary shoring, including soil nails, micro-piles, underpinning piers and CIDH piles. The alignment of the trench extends below the water table; cutoff wall piles and a seal slab poured between the cutoff walls enable crews to work in a dry environment. The seal slab varies from 3 feet to 6 feet thick. CIP gravity cantilever retaining walls reach 30 feet in height at deepest part of trench.
The project will eliminate at-grade traffic crossings through the downtown area, which will minimize delays for emergency response units and afford safe pedestrian and vehicle overcrossings.
