Our History

Granite Construction Incorporated is one of the largest heavy civil contractors in the U.S. and is a large producer of sand, gravel, asphalt and other aggregate-based construction materials. Granite's corporate offices are located in Watsonville, California. In 2004, the company employed over 6,000 people and reported revenues of $2.1 billion. Founded in 1922, Granite Construction Company performs a variety of infrastructure projects in the public sector, including the construction of roads, highways, bridges, dams, tunnels, canals, mass transit facilities and airports. In the private sector, the Company also performs site preparation services for buildings, plants, subdivisions and other facilities.

Granite's participation in both the public and private sectors and its diverse mix of project types and sizes have contributed to the Company's revenue growth and profitability in changing economic environments. The Company's principle operating subsidiary, Granite Construction Company, is organized into two operating divisions.Through these divisions Granite serves the entire continental United States.

Granite West is comprised of branch offices which serve home markets in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Washington. Granite East pursues major infrastructure projects in their home markets of Texas, Florida and New York and generally complete larger (contract amounts in excess of $50 million) heavy civil projects with contract durations typically exceeding two years.

The Company's two operating divisions complement each other in a variety of ways. The Large Projects Team in Granite East uses large construction equipment and employs sophisticated techniques on complex projects, while Granite West draws on the Large Project resources which are generally not available to smaller local competitors. Conversely, Granite West has greater knowledge of their home markets and provides Granite East with valuable information regarding larger projects in the branch's local areas. Moreover, the two divisions occasionally combine their efforts to jointly perform projects when a given contract exceeds a single location's capabilities. Granite also owns and leases aggregate (rock, sand, and gravel) reserves, 58 construction materials processing plants (rock, asphalt, concrete), and one of the largest heavy construction contractor equipment fleets in the United States.
