College Recruiting

If
at this point you believe Granite is where you want to begin your career, it
is important for you to determine whether or not you have the attributes that
lead to a successful career in construction. You must have leadership potential,
enjoy working outdoors and have the tenacity to solve problems and make decisions
in a fast-paced environment. If you possess these attributes, then perhaps construction
is right for you.
In return for the hard work and commitment that we demand, you'll receive the best education in this industry, and promotions and salary increases to match your performance. How far and how fast you progress is up to you.
We visit over 30 different major universities across the country, looking for students majoring in engineering and construction management who want to start their career with Granite. Graduates have an array of opportunities to choose from.
Granite's career opportunities not only include construction management and engineering, but in addition, we mine, process and produce civil engineering materials throughout the western US, so we look for people who see excitement and challenge in this work.
Lasting profitability depends on maintaining a healthy and accident-free workplace, so safety engineers are an integral part of manager's efforts to be profitable.
As a heavy civil contractor we own a fleet of over 4,000 pieces of equipment, meaning we need qualified and enthusiastic people to learn how to manage this major asset.
We also seek graduates who are pursuing business degrees to fill our ever-growing need for business managers in our branch and heavy construction offices.
Co-op/Internship Program
The Granite Co-op Education Program and internships give you employment experience and help acquaint you with Granite's organization and work style. Your co-op experience will give you a competitive edge when you are ready to enter the work force and will provide room for individual growth and training.
At Granite, we work with colleges and universities to provide work experience through two avenues of pre-professional positions: our Co-op and Internship positions. The program provides students the opportunity to apply training learned in the classroom with practice out in the real world.
A college co-op student is one who is enrolled in a cooperative education program at an accredited four or five-year college or university leading to a bachelor or advanced degree. The co-op must be enrolled in either a technical or non-technical discipline. Co-ops usually work for a six-month period starting in either January or June, although most managers are flexible with this requirement.
Other students who seek professional work experience may be employed as interns. Most of our interns work at Granite during summers between academic sessions. However, Granite will work with schools without formal co-op programs to arrange internships for a 6-7 month work period like those in the cooperative education program.
Students are placed in positions related to their majors or career goals. Salary is based upon the number of credits completed toward the degree. The student will be requested to provide this information in writing from their school prior to the assignment.
Granite considers the use of the co-op and internship programs as an important recruiting tool. The co-op work assignment provides our management the ability to identify your potential, as a prospective employee for the commitment of regular employment.
What You Can Expect
On your first job as a co-op or intern, you can expect to deal with a wide array of tasks, from managing a certain subcontractor to working with a mechanical engineer. Whether managing technical issues to dealing with a wide mix of people, no day will be the same. As a co-op, you'll be considered an estimator or project manager in training. You will be given as much responsibility as you are willing and able to accept.
After finishing a co-op or internship with us, you'll know what the heavy civil construction field is all about. If after a successful experience, you want to stay with Granite, you'll be at the top of the list for the best career opportunities possible.
