Engineering Services QC/QA

Before we make any product we fully understand the specifications and requirements our customers require. During production, materials are tested regularly to verify consistency and quality. Our testing goes well beyond the normal material manufacturer; our products must meet some of the strictest expectations: those of our own crews! Our Engineering Services Group is actively involved with industry experts working to develop the best performing products providing the greatest value to our customers.
Aggregates
Granite's modern laboratory facilities are equipped for performing standard aggregate tests required by aggregate producers and the construction industry. Granite conducts various tests required by state DOTs and other specifying agencies.
The following is only a partial list of tests we are capable of performing and are common for typical producer-quality control and quality assurance.
- Sieve analysis
- Loss by washing
- Crushed count
- Unit weight
- Sodium sulfate soundness
- Los Angeles abrasion
- Specific gravity and absorption
- Visual deleterious materials
- Organic impurities
- Flat and elongate particles
- Angularity index
- Sand equivalency
- Moisture density relationship
- Particle size analysis of soil
- Atterberg limits
Our experienced laboratory staff conducts thousands of tests annually for aggregate producers committed to providing quality materials to their customers. As a result of DOT's requiring certified materials on their projects, our staff has acquired the necessary certifications that allow us to evaluate aggregate physical properties.
Asphalt Services
Pavements are a key infrastructure component and represent considerable capital investment. Proper design and maintenance are necessary to maximize your investment in pavement systems.
Granite provides pavement consulting services to help you with:
- New pavement design
- Construction services
- Evaluate existing pavements
- Pavement plans and specifications
- Pavement laboratory testing
- Asphalt Testing
- Pavement mix-designs
- Plant monitoring and on-site density control can
ensure quality pavement performance
Granite's services encompass both intensive field and laboratory testing, and include:
- Superpave and Marshall Mix Designs
- Core Analysis
- Extraction/Gradation
- Specific Gravity compacted Mix
- Hot Bin Analysis
Projects
Construction material is not consistent in composition, even when the same manufacturing or application method seems to be used from batch to batch. In some cases, even a seemingly negligible variation from specification can result in excessive penalties. It seems much wiser and far less expensive to have a project monitored step by step, rather than to incur penalties for product deviation from specifications. Our engineers are available to design an asphalt mix that will perform exactly as predicted.
Some project types include:
- Highways and bridges
- Runways and taxiways
- Schools
- Medical facilities
- Power generation facilities
- Dams
- Storm water detention systems
- Mass transport rails, tracks and maintenance facilities
Some of our customers include:
- Department of the Army
- Department of Transportation (Arizona/California/Utah)
- Desert Aggregates
- Intermountain Slurry Seal, Inc.
- Federal Highway Administration
- Federal Aviation Administration
Note: Sampling and testing will be conducted in accordance with the latest applicable or designated specifications of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), State of California Department of Transportation, or other applicable agencies.
INSPECTION AGENCIES
- AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL)
- United States Army Corps of Engineers
- Calibration-Certification Corporation
- Concrete & Cement Reference Laboratory (CCRL)
ACCREDITING AGENCIES
- American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)
- United States Army Corps of Engineers
- California Department of Transportation (CalTrans)
Soil Test
Granite's modern laboratory facilities are equipped to perform standard soil tests required by the construction industry. We conduct various geotechnical, environmental, and geosynthetic tests. The following is only a partial list of tests that we are capable of performing and are common on typical construction projects:
- Soil Laboratory Testing
- Gradation
- Classification
- Proctor Compaction
- Atterberg limits
- Density
- California bearing ratio (CBR)
- Permeability
- Unconfined compressive strength
- Soil Field Testing
- Soil strength
- Monitoring structural fill
- Soil/aggregate compaction
- Relative density
- Proof rolling
- Field CBR
During construction, quality assurance/quality control and project administration are needed.
The following services are also available:
- Review pavement design for constructability
- Site testing
- Laboratory testing
Testing is important in determining proper installation, as well as ascertaining that quality materials are used in the project.
