Granite Construction Awarded $66.6 Million Interstate Highway Reconstruction Project In North Carolina

Watsonville, California (June 17, 2003) Granite Construction Incorporated (NYSE:GVA) announced today that Granite Construction Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary, has been awarded a $66.6 million highway contract by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The project involves widening 2.1 miles of Interstate 85 from two to five lanes in each direction from east of Cole Mill Road to west of Broad Street in Durham, North Carolina.

Re-construction of this segment, which attaches to the two I-85 jobs that Granite is currently building, will include replacement of three permanent bridges, one temporary widening bridge and two temporary prefabricated modular steel bridges. The scope of the project includes construction of a pedestrian box culvert, two drainage box culvert extensions, and 14,000 linear feet of retaining and noise walls. This project also includes a component to design and construct off-site detour improvements on six adjoining roads and streets.

Work is anticipated to begin on or about June 23, 2003 and is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2006.
