Calumet Tunnel System

Completed more than a year ahead of schedule, this was the largest of all TARP projects consisting of 11.54 miles of hard rock tunnel. A 30’ ID lined construction shaft 340’ deep, and 30’ ID work shaft 336’ deep including 19 drop/vent/access shafts were also constructed. This project received the prestigious AGC of America’s “Build America Award” for early completion and 5 world records for large diameter tunneling performance.

The Challenge

Major flooding in the Metropolitan Chicago area resulted in raw sewage flushing directly into Lake Michigan.

The Solution

To reduce flooding the Kenny Tunnel Division diverted stormwater and sewage into temporary holding reservoirs.
