Granite Superintendent Dan Cords Receives Nevada Mining Association Safety Award

The Nevada Mining Association (NvMA) recently awarded Granite Superintendent Dan Cords with the 2020 Individual Safety Award for his excellence in safety at Nevada's Lockwood Quarry. The award celebrates 35 men and women throughout Nevada's mining industry, who make an extraordinary effort to ensure all mine workers return home safely after every shift.

"The safety standards and practices in Nevada mining are second to none," said NvMA President, Tyre Gray. "Miners in the Silver State continue to set a high bar for workplace safety, not just in Nevada, but around the world. It is men and women like these 35 award recipients that have helped create and strengthen that culture."

Dan oversees safety operations at Nevada's Lockwood Aggregate, Wade Sand, Lockwood Hot Plant, Sparks Hot Plant, Recycle Plant, and Portable Plants. With over ten years managing each plant operations' safety program, Dan is a dedicated, experienced, and proven safety leader responsible for ensuring each employee's safety, health, and well-being.

"During Dan's career as a Granite superintendent and safety specialist, he has successfully implemented a robust safety plan fostering a safety-based culture throughout his entire workforce," states Granite Regional Vice President Brian Dowd. Dan's team members, many of which average ten years of service, also attest to Dan's successful management style. He has worked to implement a safety culture that empowers employees by fostering an awareness of each other's daily role in safety and striving to reinforce work performance that enhances safety within the Granite culture.

"Dan's management approach to cross-training team members has resulted in cross-functional teams who are trained and skilled in a variety of areas within Granite's Construction Materials Department and who gain knowledge, understanding and work more safely ," explains Dowd.
