After years of planning, coordination, and construction, Granite has successfully completed the SR-30 Improvement Project in Logan, Utah, delivering roadway, multimodal, and utility upgrades that create a safer, more connected transportation corridor.
Granite Completes SR-30 Improvements
Among the most visible additions are a new 12-foot-wide multi-use path stretching more than 7 miles along the corridor, and a pedestrian and bicycle underpass that provides safe access beneath SR-30. Together, these features create new opportunities for cyclists, runners, and outdoor enthusiasts while improving connectivity throughout the area.
For motorists, the project is a major safety improvement. What was once a two-lane roadway with no shoulders now includes 12-foot shoulders, turn lanes, a center median, center barrier, and guardrails.
Delivering these benefits presented challenges. One of the most complex aspects of the project involved constructing two precast box culverts within the environmentally sensitive Cutler Marsh area. The team deployed innovative dewatering strategies, including the use of large water-control bladders, to isolate work zones while managing water flowing beneath the roadway through existing stabilization systems. Environmental stewardship was a top priority, demanding careful monitoring of water conditions and the completion of required wildlife and nesting bird surveys throughout construction.
Installing cement-treated road base beneath both new and existing roadway was another technical challenge. Crews had to maintain a precise 3/8-inch finish tolerance during a mere four-hour window after mixing. The operation used intelligent compaction technology, allowing the team to digitally track compaction passes, speed, and frequency to ensure quality and compliance.
