Handley Ranch: Built for the Salinas Valley
Granite’s Handley Ranch Quarry in Gonzales sits in the heart of California’s Salinas Valley—one of the most
productive agricultural regions in the world. The facility produces roughly 350K tons of materials annually, supplying
aggregates for construction, landscape products, and Granite’s nearby asphalt plant in Salinas.
Recent water management upgrades and upcoming investments in automation mean the quarry will continue to support infrastructure in the valley for generations.
Location, Location, Location
The first benefit of Handley Ranch is its locality. Just over 3 miles from US Highway 101, the quarry is uniquely situated
to serve infrastructure needs throughout the Salinas Valley. That proximity has real implications for cost, efficiency, and
environmental impact.
“In terms of logistics,” says District VP Ian Firth, “the CO2 and other environmental impacts of just moving bulk materials to the project site—it’s going to be hard to beat that. Shorter haul distances mean fewer truck miles, reduced emissions, and more reliable delivery schedules. This is critical for any facility but especially when working in such an active agricultural region.”
Managing Water in a Critical Basin
Groundwater is a vital resource in the Salinas Valley, and Handley Ranch relies on well water for operations, making conservation a critical priority.
“Groundwater in California has become a very precious resource,” says Area Operations Manager Carson DeVinny. “Our investments have allowed us to minimize the use of that resource.”

In 2023 Granite invested approximately $1.2M in a belt filter press system that significantly increases Handley Ranch’s ability to recycle water. Combined with the existing clarifier system, the upgrade enables faster, closed-loop water reuse, reducing overall demand on local groundwater supplies.
The technology works by extracting water from slurry produced during the washing process; this yields drier, more manageable materials while returning water to the system for immediate reuse, resulting in both operational efficiency and environmental benefit.
Investing in Automation
The Handley Ranch team is in the process of modernizing the quarry’s control systems by adding cameras, replacing outdated programmable logic controllers, and developing mobile iPad based controls that allow operators to monitor and manage the plant. The goal is to free up our experienced personnel to spend more time outside—observing the plant, identifying issues early, and improving overall reliability and efficiency. “Modernization is important, but there are real challenges at Handley,” says Plants Manager Scott Maldonado. “We have to overcome tying into old systems and outdated technologies to get the results we want—but it’s going to be worth it.”
Supporting a Long-Term Presence
Handley Ranch Quarry is a perfect example of how strategically located materials will support Granite’s business for decades to come. With more than 100 years of reserves, Handley Ranch is a long-term play in the Salinas Valley, enabling Granite to support vital infrastructure while operating in some of the world’s most productive agricultural land.
